In keeping with the Lenovo and Qualcomm partnership, a standalone headset is coming, called the Mirage Solo. This headset is one of a new generation of Google Daydream powered standalone devices, built around Qualcomm’s reference design using the Snapdragon 835 VR platform. This follows on from previous announcements about reference designs and even a standalone headset for HTC, released in China late last year.
These VR headsets effectively integrate all the key features found in leading smartphones and puts them together in a streamlined package. You get the benefit of a wireless headset, but the dedicated processing power to do things like WorldSense; optical tracking of the world instead of being reliant of fickle accelerometers. Fully compatible with a range of Daydream peripherals like the controller, steering wheel and bats, you can engage on a wide variety of adventures.
In addition to the Mirage Solo, is the Mirage Camera. It’s a pocket sized 3D camera fitted with two 13MP fish-eye cameras, each with 180 degree field of view, for recording not just photos, but VR movies too. These can be shared via Google Photos or YouTube, and watched on something like the Mirage Solo. Again like the solo, the Cmaera comes with Qualcomme’s LTE modem and WiFi, so it can be used to stream live events.
