Logitech has just announced an update to its popular K400 living room keyboard, and it looks so good for its $40 SRP, it makes you wonder how the company plans to sell any more of its $100 K830s (which we took a look at last summer).
Mimicking the basic design cues of the K830, the K400 Plus has a keyboard with a function key to help it behave as a full-fledged media keyboard, and a touchpad (with mouse buttons) located to the right of it. Also carried-over are three volume control buttons located directly above this touchpad.
One feature the K400 Plus has that the K830 doesn’t is a special button that allows you to double-click the mouse (the yellow button to the top-left). This simply makes it easier to select programs or actions on the TV, and could be useful given your left hand is likely going to be right beside this button anyway.
Whereas the backlighting on the K830 nets the keyboard about 10 days of battery-life, the simpler design of the K400 Plus can last 18 months. You can extend the battery-life as much as possible by switching it off when it’s not in use – it should become instantly available as soon as you turn it back on.
For its $40 SRP, the K400 Plus could quickly become the ultimate living room keyboard. Given its release, it seems like the K830 is now in need of a good update, but it’s hard to imagine what Logitech will do to actually improve it, given it’s such a solid keyboard as-is.
