Readers of our reviews know that I was blown away when I got the opportunity to review Logitech’s BOOM wireless speaker, brought from the sound labs of Ultimate Ears. Prior to doing the review, I couldn’t imagine paying half the cost of that product for something as “simple” as a wireless speaker…afterwards, I ended up going out to get another one just to enjoy the amazing quality in stereo.
The BOOM was an amazing product – small, powerful, easy to use, and (most importantly) took a quality soundscape with you wherever you might go. The mixture of battery life, audio quality and sheer rugged durability made for a speaker that still hasn’t been beaten for on-the-go audiophiles.
Logitech has decided not to sit on its laurels, though – along with numerous updates to the original UE BOOM, the company is now introducing a follow-up product in the UE MEGABOOM. The MEGABOOM follows the same design of its predecessor, but sports the refinement of a couple of years of hardware improvements including 100 feet of Bluetooth range, 20 hours (!?!) of battery life, and a newly redesigned waterproof (IPX7 certified) skin.
Like the original model before it, all of that is crammed into a package that weighs under two pounds and sends sound in 360 degrees loud enough to properly annoy the neighbors (I’m really not kidding, this thing gets LOUD).
The initial press release doesn’t mention much in the way of trying to change the sound quality, which in our humble opinion is just fine – I think that even a company with as much pedigree as Ultimate Ears would be hard pressed to pull more out of a mobile device than it already has. The unit is available starting today at $299.99.
Of course, we’ll take a listen as soon as we can and let you know if anything substantial has changed – as well as put the new battery life, waterproofing and connection range through their paces. You can hopefully look forward to a review here soon, but in the meantime you can feel free to whet your appetite by looking at the product website here.
