Just when you thought you’ve seen it all, life throws you a curve ball, and you’re left unsure about what you’re looking at.
CHERRY, maker of the world’s most popular mechanical keyboard switches, sent your humble scribe a couple of packages recently. The contents of one package will be the subject of an upcoming review.
In the other package, though, is the company’s B. Unlimited AES wireless keyboard + mouse combo.
So just what’s so special about the B. Unlimited AES? The keyboard component of it, the JD-0400EU-2, is non-mechanical.
Yep, CHERRY manufactures not just the famous MX mechanical switches and entire mechanical keyboards, it also makes non-mechanical keyboards as well.
The JD-0400EU-2 boasts a business-ready aesthetic. Clad in all-black, it is a 104-key plank. The keys are laid out in a standard configuration familiar to US-based users and comes complete with a 10-key pad as well. Above the 10-key pad is a row of four hotkeys, providing convenient shortcuts to the Windows calculator, email, homepage, and keyboard lock. The key caps are chiclet-style, very similar to a laptop keyboard’s. The JD-0400EU-2 is equipped with a pair of rechargeable NiMH AAA batteries.
The keyboard is also notable because its wireless communications between itself and its USB receiver unit are encrypted. CHERRY says this is to prevent nefarious parties from “tapping into” and intercepting keystroke signals. The company really seems to go way far into ensuring this product is perfect for any business.
Meanwhile, the mouse is the company’s JF-04. Like the keyboard, it is wireless. It’s a simple mouse, boasting the same austere all-black color scheme and all of three buttons (left- and right-click and the clickable mouse wheel). Its one nod to enhanced practicality is a dual-position DPI switch, enabling changes from 1000 to 2000 DPI. The JF-04 is powered by a pair of NiMH AA batteries.
The B. Unlimited AES wireless keyboard and mouse combo is priced at circa $80.00. It should be available in North America imminently.
