For about as long as the Xbox 360 has existed, it’s always been an FPS title that’s dominated the #1 spot of the “most played” list (tallied as people playing the game while also logged into Xbox Live). Key titles in this list have been Gears of War, Halo, and most recently, Call of Duty. In fact, Call of Duty gets more plays on the Xbox than it does the PC – the platform the series originally launched on. But, supreme no more. Its replacement? None other than Minecraft.
On one hand, given the popularity of Minecraft this isn’t much of a surprise. On the other, damn! Call of Duty, a game put out by industry giant Activision, got knocked out of first place by an indie developer offering a game with graphics that defines “low-res”. The “graphics aren’t everything” argument sure holds true here.
Unfortunately, unlike Steam which publishes actual numbers for all to see, Microsoft does not. Minecraft could have doubled CoD: Modern Warfare 3‘s playerbase, or it could have increased it by 1. Regardless, for a casual game like Minecraft to dominate Xbox’s charts… a game that’s downloadable no less… that’s pretty impressive.
