Think it’s impossible for a $30 gaming mouse to be impressive? Mad Catz’s brand-new R.A.T.1 proves the opposite, and in fact, it offers some features not even seen on higher-end mice, including the company’s other R.A.T. mice.
Like the rest of the R.A.T. lineup, the R.A.T.1 is modular. It consists of three main parts: the base, the heart/sensor, and the palm rest. As the title alludes to, the palm rest is one component that can be replaced by anyone with a 3D printer, should you want it in a slightly different shape or color. Mad Catz will be providing the CAD file for this once the mouse becomes available. Whether a CAD file will become available to replace the base as well, we’re not sure. But as it has no moving components, it looks like it too could be easily replaced.
The shot below shows another one of the R.A.T.1’s interesting features: it can convert to a notebook mouse once the base is detached. This is pretty interesting, because it would allow someone to take the R.A.T.1 with them, but not take up much space in their bag. Once home, it can be easily converted back to a desktop mouse.
If neon green isn’t quite your cup of Sencha, then you can also get it in red and white:
While this is a gaming mouse, Mad Catz says it’s perfect for those who don’t even game. After all, just because someone doesn’t game, it doesn’t mean that they wouldn’t like something this neat looking on their desk. There are six buttons in all, including what appears to be a DPI switcher.
Mad Catz says that its R.A.T.1 will begin shipping next month. Those who want one can head on over to the product page to pre-order now.
