This past summer, as hoards of people were waiting with bated breath for Nintendo to announce a new console, it did. Well, to say that what we saw was not what we expected would be an understatement. Rather than the (finally announced) Nintendo Switch, the big N decided to pull on the heartstrings of everyone who has fond memories of the Nintendo Entertainment System with a cute little all-in-one version, “Classic Edition”.
Well, we’re mere days before the official launch of this Classic Edition (11/11), and a slew of reviews have hit the Web. Is it worth your money? The general consensus seems to be a resounding “YES!”, if you happen to be nostalgic for this kind of thing. But, one thing you need to be aware of is that this is all-in-one through and through: it cannot install extra games, or run a custom ROM (at least, unless someone figures out a way).
If this Classic Edition stored its entire OS and emulation on a standard memory card, it’d be a lot easier to hack and build custom content for. But some have pried open their early samples and found that everything is stored on a memory chip soldered onto the motherboard. Good luck writing to that limited piece of silicon.
If you’re fine with the console lacking expandability, then the Classic Edition should be right up your alley, as it features a slew of classic games, such as Super Mario Bros., Punch Out!, and one of the most rage-inducing games on the planet: Ninja Gaiden.
The folks at TechCrunch have taken an in-depth look at the new console, with every single game covered in light detail. The overall impression? “If you love NES games, buy this thing.” Just as we figured!
