It didn’t take long for the first results of Google’s Nest acquisition to be seen: The Nest Learning Thermostat has just appeared on the Google Play store. This is most notable not only because Google acquired Nest just a couple of months ago, but also because it’s the first featured product to not be a smartphone, tablet, or media streamer – or have Google’s name on it, for that matter.
The Learning Thermostat is priced on Google Play at the same SRP we’ve seen up to this point, $249.99, and the site notes that an order will leave the warehouse within one or two business days.
It’s probably not a coincidence that Google waited until Earth Day (yesterday) to make this unveiling, as the Learning Thermostat’s biggest goal is to save energy. It’s called “Learning” because it can adjust itself based on your behavior. You don’t need the heat so high when outside the house, for example, so it will adjust itself accordingly. With a mobile app, you’ll have the ability to override any of its behavioral patterns.
Equipped with a bright LCD display and Wi-Fi, this is clearly no ordinary thermostat. Because of its online capabilities, it might download occasional updates, and it will also upload data to Google’s servers so that you can view it on your mobile device later. With all of this knowledge in-hand, you’ll be able to better understand just how environmentally responsible you’ve been.
Nest also produces a smoke / carbon monoxide detector, but that’s yet to appear on Google Play.
