With the launch of Sony’s PlayStation VR now less than three months away, the time is now to figure out if you want one, because they’re sure to sell fast. One of the biggest concerns from those considering a VR kit is the amount of space required; something like the HTC Vive requires quite a bit of room for optimum operation (15×15), while the Oculus Rift works best with your butt glued to a seat, or you standing in place.
The PlayStation VR falls into the same category as the Rift, in that not that much free space is required, and you’re not expected to get up and walk around. Thanks to a leaked sales brochure, we know that the recommended available space is 60-square feet – or more specifically, 9.8′ x 6.2′ feet. An example setup can be seen below:
According to the brochure, some games might require the player to stand, and in that case, it’s up to the player to make sure the area is clear before gaming commences. Since even while standing, you are not expected to walk around, this requirement shouldn’t be difficult to meet.
The PS VR is going to offer a social mode, which lets bystanders follow along with what you are seeing, and if you are in the mood for watching a flick, then you can take advantage of a cinematic mode to make the experience more enjoyable.
Because the PlayStation 4 isn’t as powerful as a PC that’s typically recommended for VR, the headset will include a separate processor unit to help smooth out gameplay.
If you want to purchase only the VR headset kit, it’ll cost you $399. If you don’t own a PlayStation Move, you can opt for a $499 kit which includes the headset (and accessories), PlayStation Move controllers, a PlayStation Camera, and a copy of PlayStation VR Worlds.
