Oculus Rift has been a bit of a hard sell for me; I just can’t see me wanting to game with it all too often, outside of short bursts. It kind of gives me the feeling that the original Wii did when Nintendo released it. But despite that, there’s no denying that some of the created experiences can be quite compelling, not just because they can immerse you into certain environments, but because they can immerse you in recognizable environments.
Such as the Bridge of Star Trek‘s Voyager. That’s a reality that Thomas Kadlec made possible, with the help of Unreal Engine 4, which supports the Oculus Rift out-of-the-box. Not only that, but it’s easy-to-use, and allows things like this to be created quicker than ever before. Thomas gives some glowing comments about the engine:
I almost have the sensation of being a “movie director” when working with Unreal Engine 4. I can come up with an idea and in a matter of minutes you can come up with an implementation that looks really amazing.
That being the case, it seems certain that this won’t be the last demo like this.
If you own, or did own, an Oculus Rift, which environments would you like to explore?
