When we talked to NVIDIA a couple of weeks ago at CES, it seemed like its updated SHIELD Android TV device would be launching at some point next month. Well, that notion couldn’t have been more incorrect, as the company has today announced that the device is available for sale right now.
As expected, the new SHIELD TV is selling for $199 USD. Later this month, the Pro model will become available for $299 USD, with the only difference being that it includes 500GB of storage. Given that the SHIELD includes multiple USB ports, we’d have to imagine that plugging your own storage in will work in lieu of upgrading to the Pro – just be sure to check that your favorite apps can make use of external storage.
We had quite a bit of hands-on experience with the new SHIELD TV during CES, and to say that it could prove to be a hit is an understatement. Running on Android 7.0 ‘Nougat’, the latest SHIELD TV is designed from the ground up for streaming, and includes huge app support (over 1,000, if memory serves). This includes both Netflix and Amazon Video 4K/HDR support, and of course, Steam and GeForce NOW.
As we discovered at CES, owners of the original SHIELD TV are not going to be left without that or any other support. We were told that an update should become available at the launch of the new device, so we guess that means you should get to checking if there is in fact an update available.
This isn’t the last time we’ll be talking about the new SHIELD TV, so stay tuned. No pun, of course.
