NVIDIA has issued a voluntary recall of its SHIELD Tablet. The recall encompasses all versions that were sold between July 2014 and July 2015, which in effect makes it most SHIELD Tablets out there. This is due to the fact that the battery used has the potential to overheat and pose a fire hazard.
The process is simple, but as with all recalls, it’s a nuisance: “NVIDIA is asking customers to visit www.nvidia.com/support/tabletrecall for information on how to obtain a replacement device. NVIDIA is also asking consumers to stop using the recalled tablet, except as needed to participate in the recall and back up data. Consumers will receive a replacement tablet after registering to participate in the recall.”
As the blurb says, you’ll want to back up your tablet’s data, which can be done by plugging it into a PC, or using ES File Explorer to copy / paste folders over a network. If your device is rooted and you want to restore it just as you left it with the new device, I’d recommend using Titanium Backup to get that done.
Interestingly, this recall comes at the same time the SHIELD Tablet receives its latest update, which upgrades Lollipop to 5.1.1, and improves system stability and squashes a bunch of bugs.
