NVIDIA Announces First ‘GTX’ 500 Series Mobile GPU: GTX 560M

Aiming to provide mobile gamers with the best performance possible for the latest games, NVIDIA took advantage of the ongoing Computex show in Taipei, Taiwan, to announce its fastest 500-series mobile GPU to date, the GeForce GTX 560M. At the same time, the company announced another new product on the other end of the spectrum, the entry-level GT 520M. Both GPUs are designed to work elegantly with NVIDIA’s Optimus technology.

With regards to the GTX 560M, NVIDIA summed it up to us like this in an e-mail: “5 hours in email, 50 fps in Duke Nukem!” Of course, without having had the opportunity to test out the upcoming Duke Nukem Forever, it’s a little hard to surmise what the game will look like to get it to run at  50 FPS on average, but as NVIDIA’s highest-end mobile GPU, it’s sure to deliver some great performance and visual fidelity nonetheless.

Compared to the previous high-end chip, the 555M, the GTX 560M features more cores (192 vs. 144), higher clocks (775MHz core vs. 590MHz, 1550MHz shader vs. 1180MHz and 2500MHz memory vs. 1800) and at the same time upgrades the memory from DDR3 to GDDR5 – a first for the 500 series.

According to NVIDIA, the GTX 560M offers the ultimate sweet-spot to gamers, providing enough juice to power the best-looking games out there at 1080p, and because it operates with Optimus, equipped notebooks should offer some great battery-life when doing things other than gaming. So far, Toshiba, ASUS, Alienware, Clevo and MSI have all announced certain notebook models that will feature this GPU, and all should become available on the market soon.
