It’s been about a month since NVIDIA launched its flagship GeForce GTX 580, so what better time than a couple of weeks before the holidays begin to release a follow-up, the GTX 570? According to NVIDIA, this card is more power-efficient, features a faster architecture, and should be on average about 25% faster than a GTX 470. According to our 3DMark 11 article, that seems about right.
Due to a lot of goings-on in life, I’ve had limited time to pound out a whack of content, and some companies made it all too convenient (sarcasm) to choose the exact same day for an embargo lift. So, we’re in the process of wrapping up our GTX 570 testing, and the review will be delivered in the days to come.
One thing NVIDIA has been focusing on with its GTX 500 series is to feature a lower power consumption, which it achieves with the help of a chip that throttles the power and performance once things get too heated, and in addition, it has also been employing improved coolers for lower temperatures. These two things combined with better performance, it sounds like a potential winner.
Well, “winner” depends on perspective. NVIDIA is pricing the GTX 570 at $349, and as GTX 470s can be found for $299 or under, it doesn’t make this card a must-have. If it was also priced at $299, there’d be no question as to the value, so it really comes down to what you are looking for. If you appreciate improvements other than raw performance increases (as I do), it’s worth a consideration.
We’ll have more thoughts soon…
