It might have taken a little bit longer than most gamers would have preferred, but NVIDIA today has unveiled its GTS 450 mainstream offering, based on the Fermi architecture. Up until now, the only options NVIDIA fans had was the choice of ~$200 offerings, but this release, priced at around ~$130, blows the doors open for those looking for good performance at an affordable price.
We’re running a bit behind on our testing, so we’ll be publishing our review later this week. It will include both SLI results and also a look at ASUS’ ENGTS450 TOP DirectCU.
When NVIDIA talked to us about the GTS 450 a couple of weeks ago, it stressed the fact that it wasn’t designed for high-end gamers, but rather those who use common resolutions (1680×1050 or lower) but still want to play current games. It’s set to compete with AMD’s Radeon HD 5750, and thanks to recent price drops, the prices are almost the same.
NVIDIA touts that the GTS 450 is the faster of the two, though, and is able to in some instances compete with even the HD 5770 – but we’d have to imagine that such a case would involve usage of Fermi’s strong suits, such as tessellation. NVIDIA also states that PhysX and 3D Vision will help lure gamers in as well. AMD on the other hand, states that Eyefinity and things like power consumption will keep gamers over to that side.
Whatever the case, we’ll find out later this week just how things shape up. While you wait for our take on things, you can check out our friends reviews at Legit Reviews and The Tech Report.
