At this year’s CES this past January, there was a lot of talk about USB 3.0, and it was no surprise. Just a couple of months prior, the interface was unleashed to the public, and those who owned capable motherboards/add-in cards were craving for the chance to purchase a capable product. One such product that caught my eye was found in OCZ’s hotel suite… a sleek silver external enclosure with an SSD inside, and a USB connector outside.
The product had no name at that time, but the company has just officially announced it as “Enyo”. I admit that Enyo wouldn’t be the first word I’d pick (I can’t help but think of certain other words when I see it for some reason), but like most other unusual names, I’m sure this one will grow on me. The name is not what’s important, though, it’s the fact that this external enclosure is small, capable of insane speeds, and looks good.
An important fact to stress is that this is an SSD, and a more accessible one. Like any other 2.5″ external storage drive, this one is portable and easy-to-use. The big difference here is of course speed. Plug it in, copy data over or copy data off at the same speeds you’d see as if the drive were installed right in the machine. That’s the nice thing about USB 3.0, there’s enough power delivery through the port, that you don’t even even a separate power plug – which is a rather significant downfall of eSATA. That’s at least the case of SSD’s, which are ultra-low power. Regular hard drives are a bit different.
Initially, OCZ will be selling the Enyo with capacities of 64GB, 128GB and 256GB. At this time, pricing hasn’t been disclosed, but it shouldn’t be too long before we can get that information. The 64GB version of the drive sports speeds of 225MB/s read and 135MB/s write, while both the top-tier models see speeds of 260MB/s and 200MB/s write. Yes, thanks to the USB 3.0 interface, speeds like these are indeed possible, and all I can say is, *drool*. Alright, an action really isn’t a word, but I’m sure I’m not alone here.
We’ll be taking one of these babies for a spin (probably a bad term for SSDs) soon, so stay tuned for our full review!
Enyo SSDs offer an array of state-of-the-art features for prosumers looking to take advantage of the SuperSpeed 5Gbps port. In addition to cutting-edge performance, this portable SSD offers superior power management and lower CPU utilization far surpassing the capabilities of external hard drives. With up to 260MB/s read and 200MB/s write capabilities, OCZ makes storage ten times faster than USB 2.0 speeds, while also being backwards-compatible with legacy ports.
