OCZ Technology has made a new name for itself with solid-state drives, and isn’t showing any signs of slowing down any time soon. The company has just announced that it has signed an agreement to pick up a design team and select IP assets from the UK division of PLX Technology, a SoC design company.
It is interesting to note because OCZ has already pushed the envelope with SSD designs with its in-house design of the PCIe-based Z-Drive and RevoDrive SSDs. In conjunction with OCZ’s prior acquisition of the SSD controller design firm Indilinx, OCZ apparently has plans to further expand on its existing PCIe and SATA based SSD designs.
In the press release OCZ notes that “PLX’s UK design team has built a reputation for designing innovative and reliable system-on-chip (SoC) solutions and the acquired engineering team’s expertise provides OCZ with additional resources for controller design.” Specifically, OCZ expects to accelerate SSD development, reduce product time-to-market, and decrease development costs by bringing more steps in the controller and SoC design elements in-house.
