As expected, OnePlus today yanked the veil off of its brand-new OnePlus 3T. Well, “brand-new” might be stretching it, as the phone is more of an iterative release to the OP3 – a second option for those who want to shell out a bit more for the ultimate in performance.
Whereas the $400 OP3 includes Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 processor, the OP3T bumps that to the 821, equating to a boost of 150MHz. Both the 820 and 821 are built on Samsung’s 14nm FinFET process and sport the same architecture – it’s more of a speed boost than anything else. The OP3T, like the original, includes 6GB of LPDDR4 memory.
A great improvement with the 3T is that it boosts the battery from 3,000mAh to 3,400mAh, and despite that, the phone weighs the exact same (158g). OnePlus claims that when using the Dash Charger, the OP3T can gain a day’s worth of use in just a half an hour. When we tested the original OP3, we found that it could charge from 0% to 97% in just 60 minutes, and we wouldn’t expect things to change (except for the better, perhaps) here.
Another notable change is that the front camera has been upgraded from 8 megapixel to 16, using Samsung’s 3P8SP sensor. The back 16MP camera remains the same. Also added here is Android 7.0, a feature that the original OP3 should be gaining next month.
Given the updates here, it’s clear that the OP3T isn’t an upgrade for OP3 owners, but it’s a great choice for those who’ve been tempted by the OP3 but never pulled the trigger. With all this thing packs for $439, I can’t help but begin imagining what the future OP4 might include.
The OnePlus 3T becomes available next week, and can be purchased straight from the source.
