OnLive, the Internet based game streaming startup, is already looking into the prospect of expanding its horizons into the world of movie streaming. With the backbone to support game streaming services to multiple users, why not put it to more use via movie streaming like Netflix? OnLive already provides movie streaming of a basic sort via user generated videos of the games it provides.
With the introduction of the micro-console as well, Onlive is already setting up to provide streaming services to those without a PC. There is also the $9.99/month unlimited gaming package. Rounding the deal out with movies would be a real bonus to the system. There is definitely a lure to being able to play any game and watch any movie on any device, but will the content companies allow it?
OnLive is on the right track to provide all round content streaming, if only it could get more games on its service. All it needs is music to top it off and it’ll have the whole package in one. Persuading content owners is another matter though.
If only bandwidth caps were lifted and Internet speeds weren’t so slow and expensive, then all these streaming services would be so much more appealing… patience is a virtue I guess.
Could OnLive get any bigger? Maybe. This start-up company has been all over the tech news with the release of their MicroConsole, which enables games to be played from anywhere that a broadband connection and HDTV is available. But it looks like the company may not be satisfied with stopping there. Gaming is a big industry, no doubt, but there’s more to be had in the content universe. With Netflix being the dominant content streamer out there, OnLive is reportedly considering a rival service.
