ATI Radeon X1K Released!

Posted on October 5, 2005 2:55 PM by Rob Williams

Well the new Radeon series has *finally* been released! It’s been a long time since we first heard tell of the new cards, so was it worth the wait?

Nothing immediately impressed me, although the 1800XT does seem to out perform the 7800GTX. NVIDIA had that care out months ago though, and will cost less than the X1800XT.

Check out reviews of the new cards at: Guru3D, Tech Report, Hexus, Hard|OCP, Hot Hardware, T-Break, Driver Heaven and PC Perspective.

yellowTAB ZETA OS Version 1.0 Review

Posted on October 5, 2005 2:54 PM by Rob Williams

When looking for an alternative to Windows most people think of either Apple’s OS X or Linux. Of course, these are both viable alternatives but there are not the only options. One way to go is with yellowTAB’s ZETA operating system. Though it is not yet very popular, ZETA is the successor to BeOS, the highly regarded OS from Be Incorporated. This is a very interesting and beautiful operating system which may not presently be a threat to Linux but it does have more than a few things going for it.

NVIDIA GeForce 7800 Ultra?

Posted on October 5, 2005 2:44 PM by Rob Williams

Today we took a look into the NVIDIA ForceWare 81.40 which has been leaked by The French website, Station Drivers. I’ve opened the setup information file (NVDISP.INF) and noticed a lot of new Hardware DeviceID entries.

Could it be? Even though speculation said that NVIDIA would not release a 7800Ultra due to the 7800GTX doing so well.. maybe it could still happen. Check it out at NGOHQ.

Asus GeForce 6800GT 256MB PCI-E Review

Posted on October 5, 2005 2:40 PM by Rob Williams

We know a great many people are tempted to buy the cheaper versions of graphics cards but to us that is a false economy in the long run. Us like you look for value for money and seek to buy items that will have a long life. Buying a cheaper less powerful graphics card instantly gives you a poorer frame…

Casebuy EZ Power Supply Test 2 Review

Posted on October 5, 2005 2:15 PM by Rob Williams

Your power supply is arguably the most important piece of computer equipment. Without one nothing can operate. With a bad one it can fry any and everything that your computer consists of. So checking it occasionally is important. And with the introduction of the EZ Power Supply Tester from Casebuy you can check that aging power supply in minutes, saving you a lot to time and money.

SinTek 500 SLI 500W Power Supply Review

Posted on October 5, 2005 2:13 PM by Rob Williams

SinTek has a real quality unit on their hands here. The 500 Watt power supply has many great features such as the adjustable voltage rails, a 120mm adjustable fan, a digital temperature readout, and modular cabling. Having all of the cables pre-wrapped and modular makes installation a clean and easy task. All of this is wrapped together with a five year warranty.

Corsair Flash Media: 40X CF & 60X SD Review

Posted on October 5, 2005 2:11 PM by Rob Williams

Corsair has certainly done an excellent job in entering the Flash
Memory market by offering an abundance of choice. Both products live up to
their expectations and even exceed them. The 40X CF certainly impressed me
with the full 1006 MB capacity, a rare find in most storage products, but it
does come at a cost slightly more than your typical 40X card. What you do
end up buying is a brand many enthusiasts trust. The 60X SD is priced
slightly higher than some other brands, but still well below the brand names
like Lexar or SanDisk. You could even get a 1 GB 133X SD and a free 128 MB
Flash Voyager for less than the cost of comparable Lexar and SanDisk
products!

SilverStone Lascala SST-LC16M HTPC Case Review

Posted on October 5, 2005 2:09 PM by Rob Williams

The software included with the Lascala SST-LC16M is called iMedian formally
Multi-Median, and its main function is to be an all-in-one media solution.
Since my last review of the SST-LC14M, Soundgraph has completely revamped the
interface and features to make iMedian a serious contender in a market
occupied by Microsoft Media Center Edition (MCE2005), Beyond TV, Sage TV,
Showshifter and Meedio Essentials.

Weldbond Feature

Posted on October 4, 2005 5:14 PM by Rob Williams

It is my opinion that our community, the computer modding community, should know about this product and what it can do. I have used Weldbond on all my mods in one way or another, as an adhesive, as a coloring, as a special effect. I belong to many forums and when I mentioned that I used Weldbond in my worklogs, I was very surprised to see that 99% of people have never heard of it, and I would like to think that I have introduced a few people to its availability as an excellent adhesive for use in modding and other computer building.

MSI videocards are traditionally some of the best on the market, largely because the company bundles the most value into its products by including lots and lots of extras. The MSI NX7800GTX-VT2D256E PCI Express videocards we’ll be testing in this review, in single and SLI mode, each come with a full version of the highly popular “The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay” video game.

ATI Explains Their Warranty Reduction

Posted on October 4, 2005 4:45 PM by Rob Williams

ATI silently lowered its warranty from three years down to a single year on the majority of their desktop graphics cards, which has created some upset and confused consumers. The warranty change was found by consumers who visited the Warranty Service and Repair page on ATI’s website. Cutting warranties is nothing new as many will recall…

This is a very interesting read for sure. Check out the full article at Legit Reviews.

Dell’s open-source PC

Posted on October 4, 2005 4:42 PM by Rob Williams

Dell’s E510n PC comes with no operating system installed and is geared for customers who want to use open-source software such as Linux.

News.com made this comment in a super quick news posting, but it’s definitely interesting. It’s also about time. Now if only we can get AMD on Dells, then I will stop complaining about Dell. Check it out at News.com.

Samsung ML-2010 Laser Printer Review

Posted on October 4, 2005 9:41 AM by Rob Williams

Smaller than the ML-22[50/51N], but larger than the ML-1750, the ML-2010 is an excellent hybrid, merging the cost-effective economy of the 1750 with the more professional design of the 2250 series. For the more casual home user, the ML-2010 might actually be a more effective choice than a larger model such as the ML-2250 or the ML-2251N. With a larger model, the warm-up time is much greater, and the time until the first page comes out is extended.

"Hollaback Girl" first song with one Million downloads

Posted on October 4, 2005 9:38 AM by Rob Williams

For the first time since the advent of commercial digital music downloads, a recording has passed the 1,000,000 mark in download sales. The song, former Billboard #1 “Hollaback Girl” from Gwen Stefani’s debut album Love. Angel. Music. Baby., had sales of approximately 995,000 downloads as of Friday, September 30. The recording has averaged 15,000 downloads per week since it’s release on November 25, 2004.

Wow, that’s quite an accomplishment. I seriously do not like this song, so that shi*’s Bananas.. B a n a n a s! *shrug* Check out the full news post at iLounge.

NVIDIA GeForce Go 7800 GTX

Posted on October 4, 2005 9:02 AM by Rob Williams

Just like its flagship desktop counterpart, the GeForce Go 7800 GTX is a 24 pipeline GPU built on a .11 micron fab process. Complementing the 24 pipeplines, we have a full 8 Vertex Shaders and 16 ROPs (Render Operators). These added features also increases die size and transistor count. The G70’s 300 million transistors weigh in at roughly 80 million more than the GeForce Go 6800 Ultra, so that gives us an indication that this new G70 mobile part is an absolute powerhouse. Surprisingly enough though, this new mobile GPU shares the same overall footprint and power characteristics as the previous flagship GeForce Go 6800 Ultra. Again, please reference our initial review of the desktop GeForce 7800 GTX for a full analysis of the G70’s architectural features.

Harvey Danger releases new album for free online

Posted on October 4, 2005 8:44 AM by Rob Williams

In preparing to self-release our new album, we thought long and hard about how best to use the internet. Given our unusual history, and a long-held sense that the practice now being demonized by the music biz as “illegal” file sharing can be a friend to the independent musician, we have decided to embrace the indisputable fact of music in the 21st century, put our money where our mouth is, and make our record, Little By Little…, available for download via Bittorrent, and at our website.

It would be great to see more bands take such a stand. If their music really does kick ass, then people will buy it. The kicker here is though, that they heard it first for free and legally. Personally, I am a strong believer that BitTorrent is good for music, especially with lesser known bands. You may remember Harvey Danger from a few years back when they had a smash single, “Flagpole Sitta”. The new album is not quite my style, but there are a couple really great songs here. “Cream and Bastards Arise” is a great tune :)

You are able to download the album over at Harvey Danger.com and also view their stance here. Also feel free to add your two cents about this topic in our forums.
