Ulti-Mat Revolutionary Mouse Pad Review

Posted on August 9, 2005 2:15 PM by Rob Williams

If you use your mouse a lot and haven’t gotten yourself a good
mouse pad, then you don’t know what you are missing. Just the other day I
gave my friend a spare gaming pad that I had and he was simply amazed at
how smooth the mouse moved. This explains why more and more people are
throwing away those cheap pieces of plastic and going with quality. It also
explains why more and more companies are producing high quality gaming
pads. Ulti-Mat is no exception, producing what they call a revolutionary
mouse pad targeted to serious gamers.

Samsung SpinPoint MP0804H Hard Drive Review

Posted on August 9, 2005 2:11 PM by Rob Williams

The Samsung MP0804H has certainly gone through a lot and it shined in its tests. When used as an external unit, its faster than NAS units and has a lot more capacity than typical flash drives. As an internal drive, I felt an immediate rejuvenation in performance.

GeIL ONE TCCD PC3200 400MHz DDR Memory Video Review

Posted on August 9, 2005 2:09 PM by Rob Williams

With a CAS of 1.5 at 400MHz DDR this is some seriously sexy memory! The complete timing is a blistering 1.5-2-2-5 at 400MHz DDR. While this is brilliant it can be overclocked to 600MHz DDR using a timing of 2.5-4-4-7. It’s available in a single 512MB module or 512MB and 1GB Dual Channel kits. Affordable memory that kicks butt! Watch the Video to find out more…

Centon Advanced GEMiNi PC3200 Dual-Channel Kit Review

Posted on August 8, 2005 6:54 PM by Rob Williams

Centon has given us a first look at an overclocker-calibre dual-channel DDR memory kit. The two 512MB GEMiNI PC3200 dual-channel DIMMs we are testing in this review are rated to run at 200 MHz with 2-2-2-5 timings, at a voltage of 2.6V. The GEMiNi memory seemed to like running with 2.8V and it easily passed the 240 MHz mark with 2-2-2-5 memory timings. Pretty impressive! To get past 242 MHz however, we had to dramatically increase voltage to 3.4V!

Very nice, DDR480 speeds at 2-2-2 timings is nice. Quite the jump in required voltage though to get higher.. Check out the full review over at PC Stats.

Overclocking and WindowsXP x64 Edition

Posted on August 8, 2005 6:45 PM by Rob Williams

When one overclocks in the 32-bit world, we expect higher results. After all, a faster computer should lead to faster processing no matter the application, right? The next logical question is whether benchmarks would see similar results in a 64-bit computing environment? PCStats thought it would be interesting to see how overclocking is affected on the WindowsXP x64 Edition platform by illustrating both 32-bit and 64-bit benchmarks for an AMD Athlon64 4000+ based system. Would the test platform be stable enough to overclock successfully? Would WindowsXP x64 Edition require a more stable processor than its 32-bit counterpart does?

Interesting idea, and I’m surprised I didn’t investigate this further myself. Sadly, as expected, the results didn’t prove as high as they did on the 32-Bit version. Check out the full details over at PC Stats.

Quiet PC/Zalman TNN 300 System Review

Posted on August 8, 2005 10:29 AM by Rob Williams

Summarising the Quiet PC/TNN 300 system is quite simple, really. It’s a niche product that will appeal, in no uncertain terms, to a select bunch of users that value silence above all else. If you happen to be one of them, the TNN 300 is a pretty unique product that will appeal to you. For the rest who don’t mind the noise made by a few fans, you’ll wonder what the fuss is about. We try to view products in relation to how well they fit their intended purposes. In that case, then, the Quiet PC/Zalman TNN 300 system is a well-executed idea with significant practical benefits to the right type of buyer.

Rockdirect XTI 3.8 Performance

Posted on August 8, 2005 10:27 AM by Rob Williams

ATI, and by inference Rockdirect, has hit back with the Mobility RADEON X800 XT 256MB GPU, boasting hither-to unseen levels of notebook performance. Put quite simply and without adding hyperbole on top, it’s the fastest mobile 3D solution to date, and it’s almost as fast as a desktop ATI RADEON X850 XT 256MB. That’s serious food for thought, isn’t it?

Dusting Your Computer – Keeping it Cool

Posted on August 8, 2005 10:22 AM by Rob Williams

My mother always told me to dust, but I never did, mostly because I was lazy, but also because I couldn’t find any tangible benefit to dusting. I just didn’t see how I’d benefit from my room or my things being less dusty. Well now I’ve gotten a bit older, and I finally found a reason to dust – a cooler running computer. I’m going to give some background on my own system and circumstances first, then run tests before and after dusting, as well as explain how and what I used to dust.

If your computer needs cleaning, definitely check out this article at BFR!

Siemens SL65, A Forgotten gem?

Posted on August 7, 2005 5:33 PM by Rob Williams

Overall, a bit of a surprising package. Sure, it has its weaknesses, like any mobile, but if you are looking for something really small, to make and take calls and the odd picture you could do far worse than the SL65.

This is an amazing looking phone. I certainly wish my small town had something with half the style to choose from. Check out the full article over at Hexus.

Sapphire X800XL Hybrid Edition Review

Posted on August 7, 2005 4:11 PM by Rob Williams

Last week I looked at the Sapphire X800XL Ultimate edition. It proved to be a good card, putting up impressive numbers, enough so that you can play the latest games at decent detail and AA/AF combinations. This week we take a look at another one of Sapphire’s offerings, the X800 XL Hybrid. The Hybrid puts a different interface onto the X800XL series, using ATI’s PCIe->AGP bridge, but also adds Video In capability to the VO that most Sapphire cards come equipped with. What this means for you is the continuation of your legacy S754/478 boards that normally come equipped with AGP instead of the newer PCIe interface. If you are looking for the video editing portion of this, then the VIVO capability further enhances the bundle.

Nvidia: The Power of 3, or Marketing

Posted on August 7, 2005 10:45 AM by Rob Williams

I have been told that “Power of 3” is not a reference to any new cards from Nvidia or some new form of SLI. Power of 3 is likely referring to SLI, HDR and Shader Model 3.0, all feature ATI currently do not have in there line up.

That’s interesting to note, because I was hoping that it did not mean a 3 SLi setup, because two cards is enough for anybody. Check out the full speculation over at Pure Overclock.

ATI Radeon x800 GT Review

Posted on August 7, 2005 10:31 AM by Rob Williams

So before we see the launch of the upcoming high-end R520 and R580 graphics cards ATI released something price competitive and definitely has got something there that can compete with the GeForce 6600 GT. In fact in some cases it can even get close to the 12 pipe GeForce 6800. Then again .. still no Shader Model 3 is present as this is once more a refresh product and although I’m not sure on this there’s likely no Crossfire option which is a very strong point for the 6600 GT SLI. I am getting a little puzzled though. At this point in time there are so many x800/x850 products out there that quite frankly the average consumer does not have a clue anymore what the difference is.

This looks to be a fantastic competitor to the 6600GT, as long as they price it the same. The card performs better in most tests than the 6600GT, so maybe ATI did something right here. Check out the full in-depth look over at Guru3D.
