Athlon64 3700+ Overclocking Fun

Posted on July 7, 2005 7:00 PM by Rob Williams

After putting ECT’s awsome little Prometeia Mach II GT though its subzero paces, there’s no way we can overlook a round of phase-change overclocking… so after hooking everything up, I pressed the power button and watched the temperatures drop. A few moments later the Prometeia Mach II GT powered on the rest of the computer, and I immediately loaded the BIOS and found that the processor was running at a chilly -27C.

Titan Vanessa L-Type Cooler Review

Posted on July 7, 2005 6:58 PM by Rob Williams

For some time we have been reviewing cooling products from Titan Computers and today they bring us a rather large heatpipe cooler called the Vanessa L-Type. Companies continue to try and push the limits of air cooling and with the use of heatpipe technology seem to be looking to push it even further. The Vanessa L-Type is a large stack pipe heatsink with many aluminum fins and a 120mm fan. Let’s see if it can provide performance to match its stature…

RaidMax X-1 Gaming Case Review

Posted on July 7, 2005 2:24 PM by Rob Williams

Today, we have a look at Raidmax’s newest case, the Raidmax X-1. The X-1’s main attraction is an LCD on the front bezel displaying temperature, hard drive and fan activity. This coupled with useful and affordable features and an included 450w power supply makes for something that I’m sure will get your attention. Before we dive in, we want to send our thanks out to Raidmax for making this review possible. So without further delay, let’s see what the X-1 is all about shall we?

Opera 8 + BitTorrent?

Posted on July 7, 2005 2:22 PM by Rob Williams

Opera Software today launched a technical preview (TP) of the Opera browser for Windows, Linux and Mac that includes support for BitTorrent. Integrating this popular file-downloading technology in the Opera browser offers the end user a faster download process by utilizing full bandwidth and reducing the chance of in-transfer delay when multiple users download the same file.

In another attempt to get a one-up on the competition.. I have to say this is a great idea. Even with BitTorrent though, I still wouldn’t choose a browser on it, unless it was actually *that* good. Check out the full press release here.

G70 has ‘many’ clocks – Nvidia

Posted on July 7, 2005 2:14 PM by Rob Williams

In regards to speculation of the 7800GTX upping the clock speed by as much as 40MHz during gameplay, Bit-Tech sat down with NVIDIA’s Chief Scientist to get the scoop.

“It’s somewhat hard for us to say ‘the core clock in G70 is this single number'”, says Kirk. “We didn’t want to be accused of exaggerating the clock speed, so we picked a conservative number to talk about the core clock speed. But, yes, that is just one of the multiple clocks.”

So it actually has more than 3 seperate clocks, possibly. It’s great tech.. and smart tech at that. Check out the post over at Bit-Tech. They will be posting a full fledged interview tomorrow, to get into more details.

Biostar’s iDEQ 330P SFF System Review

Posted on July 7, 2005 1:54 PM by Rob Williams

SINCE SHUTTLE STARTED the small form factor craze with the seminal SV24, other manufacturers have been eager to carve themselves a slice of the market. Rather than simply releasing XPC clones, these new entrants have usually offered interesting new features and chassis designs, injecting a little flavor into a market largely dominated by Shuttle.

G. Skill PC4800 1GB Dual Channel Kit Review

Posted on July 7, 2005 1:45 PM by Rob Williams

G. Skill has come through with a high quality, high performance DDR product. With stock speeds of 300MHz guaranteed you can’t really go wrong here. The graphs in the testing portion of the review show that the stock settings perform as well as other overclocked TCCD modules. The ability to run with 1T timings provided a nice boost, but is by no means guaranteed.

Not good memory to overclock, but what performance without it! Check out the full review at Big Bruin.

NVIDIA Preps More GeForce 7 Graphics Chips

Posted on July 6, 2005 3:18 PM by Rob Williams

Since we are on the NVIDIA topic.. X-Bit Labs also has an editorial speculating on the leaked 80.40 drivers.

NVIDIA’s ForceWare 80.40 drivers, which were recently leaked on the Internet and are available at 3DChipset web-site, list G72 and NV48 graphics processing units, which were not yet released, among all the graphics chips the driver is capable of support. The driver also supports yet unreleased, but already somewhat known – GeForce 6600 LE, nForce4 C51 IGP, G70GL and Quadro FX 4500 – products.

Of course, we won’t know for sure until they are actually released. It’s going to be fun times though.. R520 has to make an appearance soon.. or ATI will be hurting. Check out the article at X-Bit Labs.

7800GT Coming soon?

Posted on July 6, 2005 3:15 PM by Rob Williams

NVIDIA is preparing their GeForce 7800 GT for launch within this week and similarly retail stores worldwide will carry the stock as soon as it is launched. GeForce 7800 GT possess 24 pipes and 8 vertex shaders just like the 7800GTX except that the core and memory clock speeds are lowered. The reference 7800GT card is supposingly clocked at 335MHz core and has 1.1GHz memory clock using 2.0ns GDDR3 memories. No doubt, some card manufacturers will be fitting 1.6ns memories on this card to make their 7800GT cards more attractive. The best thing is that this card will be priced at US$499 which is $100 lower than the current 7800GTX card.

Whether or not this is entirely true or not, we will only find out. $499US isn’t exactly that cheap though. Considering that the average 6800GT was around $400US a couple months ago.. they just slapped another $100 on the price. Good thing is though.. that the 6×00 series should definitely be going down in price. Source: VR-Zone.

MMO Wage Slaves

Posted on July 6, 2005 2:32 PM by Rob Williams

Gold farming has always been a huge problem in most MMORPG’s.. and this article brings us behind the scenes to see how it’s done in some places. Seriously scary..

The real money is made by the people with the resources and the right programs. Rich Thurman earned $100,000 by farming 9 billion gold in Ultima Online. A longtime user of the macro easyUO, Thurman says he had “up to 30 PCs running at once, automatically collecting gold for me.”

Whether you play MMO’s or not, it is definitely worth check out this article.

Optorite ML100 Laser Mouse Review

Posted on July 6, 2005 2:28 PM by Rob Williams

When we think of Optorite, most people out there think of CD ROM’s, CD Writers, and DVD Drives. The truth is, Optorite has been slowly diversifying their product mix. We take a look at one of their first new products in the mix: A Laser Mouse.

It’s a good looking mouse.. resembles the Logitech MX series somewhat, but it’s much glossier! Check it out at Future Looks.

nForce4 Ultra Round-up

Posted on July 6, 2005 2:21 PM by Rob Williams

In the last year, NVIDIA has risen to the top of the AMD Athlon 64 chipset market with their nForce series of single-chip solutions. As Socket 939 has matured, nForce4 has gained the dominant position in the AMD motherboard market. VIA, who has never been able to ship a competitive solution to NVIDIA’s SLI, has moved down the pecking order somewhat, and is now more regarded as a value chipset, along with SiS, in the Athlon 64 market.

This is an amazingly in-depth article if you want to know which nF4 Ultra motherboard to buy. Check it out at AnandTech.

Sony vs PSP Hackers

Posted on July 6, 2005 2:17 PM by Rob Williams

Hackers have cracked piracy protections on Sony Corp’s PlayStation Portable in the United States, the latest chapter in the company’s battle to block unauthorized game use on its new hand-held device.

The world’s top maker of video game consoles rolled out a downloadable fix for the software flaw that opened the door for the latest attack by hackers, who quickly cracked the original version of the PSP shortly after its release in Japan late last year.

I am sure this won’t be the first fix that Sony released. I see a big battle in the future, no doubt. Check out the post at Yahoo.

Grandioso Bosendorfer 290 Review @ Cyberwizard Pit

Posted on July 6, 2005 1:57 PM by Rob Williams

Arugably the world’s most-loved, and not to mention most popular instrument, the piano has awed many since the beginning of its creation, to the present – and is very likely to continue far beyond towards the future. As time went by, mankind advanced, technology grew, and the piano evolved, eventually taking on possibly the ultimate form of musical splendour – the modern concert grand, where its unparralled power and expressiveness makes it one of the legendary instruments that have shaped music through the ages, enjoyed only by a privileged few. However, today’s technology has come to the point where it is capable of capturing the very essence of a piano and the ability to play it back as one wishes, with incredible realism; the sampling era has begun. One such sampled instrument that has been garnering rave reviews is the East West PMI Grandioso Bosendorfer 290, in our hands today; let’s take a closer look at this package and see what it has to offer.

ThermalRock Eclipse mid-Tower Computer Case Review

Posted on July 6, 2005 1:49 PM by Rob Williams

Who can say this Eclipse is not a great design case from ThermalRock. We think it will fit in with all modern design rooms and offices. What more can one ask for. And the inside is soh designed that up to 11 drives can be installed as well, for those of you with that many in a computer case. Then there are the two decent 120mm fans to ensure adequate cooling without going deaf.
