Microsoft Locks Up Office 12

Posted on May 24, 2005 9:21 AM by Rob Williams

“We know that we’ve got an opportunity to provide IT the types of controls that they need for this concept that we call the ‘million dollar document,’ which is one of those documents or spreadsheets that (contain) a million dollars or more worth of IP (intellectual property),” Chris Capossela, a corporate vice president in Microsoft’s Information Worker unit, said during a meeting at a recent company-sponsored CEO summit here. “Those have got be something that IT could control. But we still want people using Excel to be able to build them.”

AGEIA PhysX Physics Processing Unit Preview @ PC Perspective

Posted on May 24, 2005 9:10 AM by Rob Williams

“Several months ago, a small start up company by the name of AGEIA brought a new term into the lexicon of PC gaming enthusiasts. A new product was outlined with promises of being “the next big thing” for gamers and developers alike to bring about a world of realism like we have never seen before. We all first heard about the PPU, or Physics Processor Unit, and its first form, the AGEIA PhysX processor.”

This is an in-depth article, and explains clear what AGEIA’s PhysX is all about, and even includes screenshots. You can check it out here.

Hackers can hold your files hostage..

Posted on May 24, 2005 9:03 AM by Rob Williams

“Computer users already anxious about viruses and identity theft have a new reason to worry: hackers have found a way to lock up the electronic documents on your computer and then demand $200 (about R1 200) over the Internet to get them back.”

Wow.. this is asinine. Symantec compared it to having a goon come into your house, and put your valuables in a safe, and hide the combination code. Anti-Virus companies, such as Symantec are already working on updates to their software, for this ‘ransom-ware’. Read more at iol.

Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil Review @ NetJak

Posted on May 24, 2005 9:02 AM by Rob Williams

” The story takes place two years after the disaster on the Mars facility run by the United Aerospace Corporation (UAC). The UAC accountants found out the nameless marine from Doom 3 forgot to pick up the petty cash drawer from the depths of Delta Labs, so they decide to mount an expedition to go and recover it. It hardly matters that the previous lab was drawn into the barriers of Hell itself, lost thousands of personnel, and nearly doomed the human race to extinction. A buck is a buck. Well, that’s not really the precedence behind the expansion to Doom 3, Resurrection of Evil, but it is equally absurd.”

Overall, they gave the game a super painful 4.5/10 score. You can check out the full review over at NetJak.

Gates Unveils MSN Virtual Earth

Posted on May 24, 2005 9:01 AM by Rob Williams

“Microsoft’s MSN division will enhance its search engine in the next couple of weeks by adding a local search index for finding business directory listings. Later, the company will supplement this with MSN Virtual Earth, a free new service that will pinpoint places in maps and satellite images.”

Ok, that sounds nothing like Googles recent dealve into sattelite maps. Ok, it sounds EXACTLY like a rip off of it. But, it will be nice if they make it even better.. we’ll see. Read about it at Yahoo News.

Fans Flock to Firefox Flix

Posted on May 24, 2005 8:57 AM by Rob Williams

“The latest tactic for the 100,000-members of the Spread Firefox movement is to make commercials. Funnyfox, three humorous video clips showing web surfers using the browser for the first time, is the slickest contribution to date. Designed to be emailed to friends, the videos — one of which shows a user’s head falling off — have proved so popular extra servers had to be set up to cope with the load.”

Haha, great stuff. There are three web-mercials to watch, and you can check them out at Funnyfox. You can also read the source article at Wired.com.

Thermaltake Sonic Tower Review @ R&B Mods

Posted on May 24, 2005 8:24 AM by Rob Williams

“The Thermaltake Sonic Tower cooler arrives in a see through plastic box as many other Thermaltake products I have layed my hands on. There’s a black box at the bottom with all the necessery screws, nuts, brackets, installation guide, and so on in it. Features and specifications are printed on the red piece of paper. In the right picture you will for the first time see how huge this cooler is with your own eyes, it’s a beast!”

Check out the review at R&B Mods to see why they call it the Tower!

“The Samsung SF-565P not only sports the copying, faxing and document scanning features you’d expect from an MFP, but it also features a fully-fledged monochrome laser printing engine. All of these are features that will gladden the heart of potential users, especially those with a lot of paper to chew through. Let’s see how this Samsung MFP measured up in our test lab.”

Thermaltake Big Typhoon Universal CPU Heatsink @ LAN Addict

Posted on May 24, 2005 8:16 AM by Rob Williams

“Yes, it is a big heatsink and requires that you have some room (OK, a lot) around your CPU socket, but the Big Typhoon’s design keeps it from have any clearance problems with components on the motherboard. Overall, I think Thermaltake did an excellent job with the Big Typhoon!”

BitTorrent to add search?

Posted on May 23, 2005 11:51 AM by Rob Williams

“Whiz kid inventor Bram Cohen and a small cadre of developers and entrepreneurs are in the final stage of launching an advertising-supported search engine dedicated to cataloging and indexing the thousands of movies, music tracks, software programs and other files for download over Cohen’s popular BitTorrent protocol.”

This sounds like a legal disaster waiting to happen. Of course, BitTorrent has many legal uses, but a search engine that would also allow you to acquire commercial software.. is not going to go over well. We’ll see how it goes once released though. Read the full article at Wired.

AEGIA Q&A @ Game Cloud

Posted on May 23, 2005 11:48 AM by Rob Williams

“Kim Stowe talks briefly about their plans for the upcoming PC game physics hardware chip.
Last March, a company called AEGIA made headlines with their plans to release a PC hardware chip that would improve physics in games. Now Gamecloud has a brief update from the company’s spokesperson Kim Stowe about their plans for the chip.”

Small interview, but it says a lot. They already have 18 Developers/Publishers looking to use the PhysX technology. They even expect the first incarnation to be released this coming Christmas as an Add-In card, which will likely end up being for PCI-E 1x. Check out the full interview at Game Cloud.

Can AMD Keep Its Hot Streak Going?

Posted on May 23, 2005 11:45 AM by Rob Williams

“For most of its history, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. was dismissed as little more than an x86 clone chipmaker, producing processors that mimic the features and capabilities of those from industry leader Intel. But in the past two years, AMD at times has shown up its much larger rival by introducing innovative microprocessors that forced Intel into the unfamiliar position of reacting to competition.”

AMD’s CEO also mentioned that he hopes for a third of the CPU market within the next two or three years. If things keep going the way they are, that could happen easily. Especially if large companies, such as Dell, finally get a clue and include AMD as an option. Read the full article at Information Week.

Half-Life 2: Aftermath Retail Version Confirmed

Posted on May 23, 2005 11:38 AM by Rob Williams

Half-Life 2 expansion Aftermath will be getting a retail release after all, Valve’s Doug Lombardi has confirmed, and the developer aims to release the game in September.

Speaking to Eurogamer at E3, Lombardi said: “Aftermath will be coming out at retail, but we’re finalising our publishing partner.” Valve recently parted ways with Half-Life 2 publisher Vivendi-Universal Games, who will cease distribution of the company’s products at the end of August.

Good, a retail version! Considering how the version via Steam and Retail costs the same, you may as well go get the boxed copy. Full articles at EuroGamer.

Connect3D X700 Pro Vs XFX 6600GT @ Pure Overclock

Posted on May 23, 2005 11:35 AM by Rob Williams

“So, why are we pitting the X700 Pro and not the XT version against the 6600GT? The X700XT has not actually hit retail yet and the word on the grapevine is that it may never hit retail. Current pricing also puts the 6600GT and X700 Pro head to head, with no more than a £10 difference between them. Currently, to pit the 6600GT against the X700 Pro makes perfect sense unless ATI does the right thing and lowers the price of the X700 Pro.”

This is an in-depth look at both cards, and they are put through multiple benchmarks. Before you buy, read this review.

Bigbruin.com Article: Memory ‘Buy’ The Numbers

Posted on May 23, 2005 11:33 AM by Rob Williams

“In this article I will start with the basics of how computer memory works (don’t worry you won’t need to be an electrical engineer to understand it), what kinds of computer memory is available, and some general recommendations on how much you should need. While I can’t possibly go over all possible scenarios and types of memory out there, by the time you have read this article you should hopefully be able to fill in the gaps, and make decisions on your own. “

Portable Search Engine for USB Flash Drives

Posted on May 23, 2005 11:32 AM by Rob Williams

“Gaviri PocketSearch is like a portable Google’s Desktop or Apple Tiger’s Spotlight in that it indexes your entire drive on-the-fly and allows you to find files based on their type, text and more. Interestingly, the difference is the program’s focus on targeting at the USB flash drive market.”

Giga-Byte G-Power Pro Universal Cooler @ A True Review

Posted on May 22, 2005 1:12 PM by Rob Williams

“CPU coolers are perhaps the biggest and fastest adapting category of
aftermarket computer products today. As new CPUs operate hotter and hotter,
more and more computer users start to realize the importance of keeping CPU
temperatures down. All the big names in aftermarket CPU cooling compete to
design the latest and greatest CPU cooler for these users. One example is
Giga-Byte’s newest flagship CPU cooler, the G-Power Pro Universal Cooler.
Just what does the G-Power Pro offer and how well does it perform?”

What a great looking cooler! Definitely unique, so check it out at A True Review.

NVIDIA Linux Display Driver Performance Analysis @ Phoronix

Posted on May 22, 2005 1:09 PM by Rob Williams

“For Windows users, with almost every new graphics driver release, whether it is ATI’s CATALYST or NVIDIA’s Forceware, a small boost in performance is generally noticeable to gamers. Does this same philosophy hold true with Linux NVIDIA users? At Phoronix we’re trying out all of NVIDIA’s Linux graphics drivers from the past year to see just how well these drivers have been tuned over time.”

MSI P4N Diamond nForce4 SLI I.E Mainboard @ Hexus

Posted on May 22, 2005 1:06 PM by Rob Williams

“MSI has taken on NVIDIA’s nForce4 SLI Intel Edition chipset and incorporated a sensible array of features that make the P4N Diamond into a true deluxe mainboard. General performance is good and SLI performance, too, is about as good as it’s going to get with LGA775 as platform base. It’s recommended as a fast LGA775 board with all the trimmings, but it can’t be recommended as the SLI board of choice – no Intel board can. SLI and overall gaming performance belongs to AMD.”

Great looking board! Head over to Hexus to read the review.

Powercolor X800 up for grabs @ Hexus

Posted on May 22, 2005 1:02 PM by Rob Williams

“In order to get this card we have set a very simple task. Most of you will not know, but Powercolor is being headed up by some new fresh faces within the UK, and we want to help them out :o)

We want you – in no more than 10 words to think up a snazzy slogan about their products/cards which they could use on a potential banner advert on a site – like HEXUS.”

Very cool idea, so get your creative juices flowing! Check it out at Hexus.
