Consumers looking for a whole lot of NAND flash goodness in a single 2.5” SATA SSD will soon have a new option to consider. Patriot is adding a 2TB model to its Ignite performance brand of SSDs. The Phison S10 has been utilized in SSDs for several years and is a standard quad-core controller with support for up to eight NAND channels. Patriot is quoting throughput of 560MB/s read and 500MB/s writes, though at this point anyone in the market for a SATA III drive would have to acknowledge the interface itself poses as much a bottleneck as anything else.
Patriot does leave us guessing as to the ever important question of price as the 2TB SSD is slated to launch in the October-December timeframe. The Ignite 960GB model presently averages 33 cents per GB, so that should provide a rough idea. The Ignite series currently utilizes Micron’s 16nm MLC grade NAND so we presume the use of MLC will continue with Micron’s latest 2Tb chips instead of more common TLC NAND solutions. Patriot will back the 2TB Ignite SSD with a three-year warranty.
