Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 Technology Promises To Charge A Battery To 80% In 35 Minutes

In our look at ASUS’ ZenFone 2 last month, our charging test showed that the phone could be boosted from 5 to 60% in about 45 minutes. ASUS itself says 60% can be done in 39 minutes, but we still managed to get close. As impressive as that might sound, though, Qualcomm’s forthcoming Quick Charge 3.0 plans to suck the impressiveness right out of it.
Quick Charge 3.0 follows-up on the aptly named 2.0, which became a fan favorite. With the introduction of something called Intelligent Negotiation for Optimum Voltage (INOV), a device will be able to continually determine the optimum power level it needs for charging. In an ideal situation, full power draw will charge a device from 0 to 80% in a mere 35 minutes.
If faster charging isn’t particularly needed, another option is to have it charge 45% more efficiently, when compared to Quick Charge 2.0. Versus 1.0, 3.0 can charge a device twice as fast.
Qualcomm notes that Quick Charge 3.0 will be available on a range of its upcoming processors, such as the high-end Snapdragon 820, as well as the 620, 618, 617, and 430 – all of which will appear in mobile devices next year.
