A purchase of OUYA at some point seemed inevitable, and Razer has today given us an answer of who’s most interested. The company has today announced that it’s acquired OUYA’s software assets – no hardware – as well as OUYA’s technical team and developer relations personnel.
The acquisition is an interesting one, but not a surprising one. Razer has been keen to hit the Android TV marketplace hard for some time, and its Forge TV console has proven to be a great start. In particular, the Serval gamepad that comes shipped with Forge TV can be used both for the console itself and while on-the-go, thanks to a smartphone docking solution. That one feature helps set Razer apart from the rest, in a market that’s becoming littered with such devices.
So what about OUYA devouts? Fortunately, Razer isn’t going to leave them hanging. In the near-future, a migration path will be offered, and at the very least, games, accounts, and controllers can be moved over to Razer’s Cortex TV platform. Further, Razer will be offering “deep product discounts” to those OUYA owners who plan to purchase Razer hardware. There are even promises of freebies, giveaways, and promotions.
In some ways, OUYA really spearheaded an entire product type, so it’s good to see that its legacy is going to live on. Razer doesn’t have interest in OUYA’s hardware, but it is planning to publish content under the OUYA name as a separate interest.
