When Samsung released its Galaxy Note 9, the company offered support for microSD cards up to 512GB in size. We’re used to seeing those kinds of numbers thrown around, and often, we can’t even acquire that kind of spec’d product if we tried – even through importing. Well, importing might now be an option, as Samsung itself has begun offering a 512GB microSD card on its German website.
Priced at €289.90 (~$330 USD), this microSD card is as expensive as a mid-range smartphone, but, could you really put a price on having half a terabyte of external storage in your phone? Clearly, such dense storage is best for those who like to capture a lot of high-resolution video, and those who can never have too many movies or TV shows with them.
The EVO Plus SDXC U3 (see? graphics card names are not so bad) 512GB card is spec’d similarly to the lower-density SKUs in the lineup. That gives us 100MB/s read and 90MB/s write speeds. That might not be as fast as some flash drives can muster nowadays, but for a finger nail sized memory card that still won’t hold back high-res video capture? It’s sufficient.
Any way you look at it, though, $330 USD for this 512GB card is a real premium. On Amazon, the 128GB model can be had for ~$48, while the 256GB costs barely anything more, at ~$63. That makes the 512GB variant, converted to USD, almost six times more expensive than the 256GB model. You’d really need that extra space to cough up all of that extra moolah. But hey, at least there’s an option, and more should come in time.
Nov 2 Addendum: It appears that there is a 512GB version available in the US. Except it’s PNY’s Elite, which delivers “up to” 90MB/s transfer speeds. It’s all yours for just $350.
