For those consumers and prosumers that gotta have it all (or at least store it all on a single SSD), Samsung has announced the first 2.5” 2TB solid-state drives targeting mainstream consumers. Some enthusiasts have been clamoring for a larger capacity SSD and Samsung is now looking to deliver.
The 850 Pro and 850 EVO utilize Samsung’s 3D V-NAND, with the Pro model configured for MLC and the EVO for TLC operation. The Pro edition features a 300TB endurance rating with a ten-year warranty, while the EVO lowers that to a 150TB endurance and five-year warranty. Such capacity does not come cheap: the Pro will launch with a $1,000 pricetag. Consumers electing to downgrade to the EVO model can cut the price to $800, and street prices will likely trend lower for both drives.
As expected, the SATA 3.0 interface will limit performance to what is already available on the market, but Samsung indicates it is already working on mSATA and M.2 form-factor SSDs for increased performance. General availability of the 2.5” SATA drives is expected by next month.
