After what seemed like a countless number of months’ worth of rumor, Samsung has today unveiled its latest top-end smartphone, the stylus-equipped Galaxy Note7. Available for preorder starting tomorrow, the Note7 will be available at AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon wireless. Pricing isn’t confirmed, but it’s expected to cost more than the Galaxy S7 edge, which itself can cost upwards of $800. The Note7 will be available in Silver Titanium, Black Onyx, and as seen below, Blue Coral:
Those who want an unlocked version of the phone will get their wish: Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and others will be stocking it soon.
The Note7 will ship with Android 6.0.1 (upgradeable to 7.0 soon), as you’d expect, and includes a quad-core SoC (presumably a Snapdragon 820), with two cores clocked at 2.15GHz, and the others at 1.6GHz. The phone packs in 4GB of LPDDR4 memory, 64GB internal flash (UFS 2.0-based), and a 12 megapixel camera at the back, and a 5 megapixel one at the front.
Despite its name, the Note7 isn’t a 7-inch device; instead, it’s 5.7-inch, and with its 2560×1440 resolution, it reaches a ppi of 518. Under the phone’s hood is a large 3,500mAh battery, wireless charging, NFC, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 4.2. Unlike the S7 and S7 edge, the Note7 replaces the microUSB connector with USB-C.
If those specs sound an awful lot like the S7 and S7 edge, that’s because they are in fact largely the same. So what’s new? For starters, there’s an iris scanner, which as the name suggests, allows you to log into the phone using your eyeball. This technology could potentially be huge, as thumbprint readers have been proven to be easily defeated by those with the right (even primitive) tools.
What sets the Note apart from the rest of Samsung’s lineup is the stylus, and this year, that has been upgraded. The newest S Pen is water-resistant, and allows users to make use of it to translate text, take rolling screenshots (stitches multi-pages into one image), and, because of insane demand around it, create GIFs.
If you want a Note7, keep your eyes peeled on your mobile carrier’s website tomorrow.
