Announced today, Synology updates its lineup with two new NAS models. The DS1515 and RS815 are logical updates to the current products offered in both the desktop (DS) and rack-mounted (RS) lines. With a focus on value and scalability, both models are priced competitively and have the ability to accommodate data growth with the employment of Synology’s own “plug and play” expansions.
The DS1515 is Synology’s first five bay “value” model. With 5 drive bays, quad-core CPU, hardware encryption engine, and 4 Gigabit LAN ports, the DS1515 provides a level of redundancy not seen in many other models at this price point. With enterprise features like hot-swappable drive bays that lock, the DS1515 should be a nice addition to an office. Should that office outgrow their DS1515’s storage, they can link up to two DX513 expansion modules and increase usable capacity as high as 120TB.
The RS815 is a compact four bay, rack mountable, NAS that is notable for its size. At only 12 inches deep, the NAS can fit in most any rack, including simple 2-post and wall-mounted units. Lacking rails, the RS815 benefits greatly by its compact design. With the bulk of its weight coming from up to four drives situated at the front of the NAS, the NAS shouldn’t sag much at the rear.
The biggest benefit of both models is that they run the fantastic DSM firmware. With that comes the advantages of regular updates to address security concerns and added features, as well as the modular benefit of Synology’s application ecosystem.
The Synology DS1515 and RS815 are available now. The MSRP for the DS1515 is $649.99; and the RS815 is $599.99. You can learn more about the DS1515 here, and the RS815 here.
