Synology has today released the latest iteration of its business-oriented DS400+ NAS series, the DS412+. The most-touted feature isn’t with the performance, but rather the chassis. Realizing that while some might not mind seeing drive bays exposed, others would rather cover them up, Synology gives users a choice with the DS412+. An included door can be easily removed if desired, though in my opinion the NAS looks great with it on.
This four-bay NAS features all of what is considered important in a business-classed NAS, including USB 3.0 ports on the back, dual redundant fans, quiet operation thanks to a passive CPU cooler, hot-swappable drive capabilities, dual LAN with failover and link aggregation support, and of course, support for business class software from VMware, Citrix and Microsoft.
The included Intel Atom D2700 dual-core processor operates at 2.13GHz, and complementing that is 1GB of DDR3 memory. Despite 4TB drives not being that common at the moment outside of pre-built enclosures, the DS412+ supports a 4x4TB configuration for a total of 16TB of storage. In such a configuration, users can expect to see read performance of up to 205MB/s and write performance of 182MB/s.
Also of note is that the DS412+ includes Synology’s DiskStation Manager 4.0, released not too long ago. Included there is advanced cloud features, Hybrid RAID, improved virtualization support and data backup, and numerous other specific features important to a small or large business.
The DS412+ is being priced at “under” $650, putting it right in line with the previous-generation.
