T-Mobile sure is on a roll right now, both with regards to beefing up its services and giving the competition a good jab. Last week, CEO John Legere poked fun at Verizon with the help of some skywriting above its headquarters, which was followed-up to days later with a series called The Scarriers, in which he freaks mobile customers out with horror stories, always finishing with a haunting mention of “overages”.
While the company already has some great momentum right now, especially in advance of an Un-carrier X announcement to take place on November 10, it truly doesn’t seem to want to slow down. Today, T-Mobile has unveiled a new product that really does set itself apart from the competition, something Legere is proud to point out. It’s called Personal CellSpot, and it’s designed to give you great coverage whether inside of your home, or a business.
I’m sure we’ve all been there: we’re walking around a store and need to get online to check something but are unable to due to a weak wireless signal, or a lack of one entirely. My local supermarket is notorious for this. With CellSpot, that issue can disappear, even in areas where cellar service is spotty or non-existent. If you guessed that this is because the signal feeds through an Internet connection, you’d be absolutely correct.
Free to those on monthly plans, this hotspot plugs into the wall for power, and into a router for Internet access. If the signal to real cell towers is weak, a phone will instead connect to CellSpot and deliver a very strong signal. You could start a call inside your house, routing it through this CellSpot, and continue the conversation outside where you’ll connect to a cell tower if the signal is stronger.
While CellSpot is useful for the home, it could prove important for businesses. With a strong signal, people wouldn’t feel compelled to leave the store early because they need to get online. It’ll also offer a better experience in general. Fighting with a cell signal while shopping isn’t in my definition of fun.
While CellSpot is free, it does require a $25 deposit – a small price to pay for what’s offered here. T-Mobile notes that one of these mini-towers is suitable for up to 16 concurrent voice chats at once, so even for small businesses, throughput shouldn’t prove to be much of an issue.
If you’re on T-Mobile and want to take advantage of CellSpot, you can head into your local T-Mobile store and pick one up right now.
