Yet again, T-Mobile has introduced a new program that’s sure to miff its biggest competitors. With JUMP! On Demand, customers can lease the hottest phone and then upgrade to the next hottest phone without hassle, up to three times per year.
T-Mobile stresses the lack of caveats here. It costs nothing to upgrade, nothing upfront, and there’s “zero waiting”. The one thing to note is that this locks you into an 18-month contract. If you are to opt for an iPhone 6, for example, it’ll cost you $15/mo for those 18 months ($270). After those 18 months, you can pay a bit more to own the phone outright, or begin leasing a different phone.
If the iPhone 6 becomes too old-school after iPhone 7 lands, you’d technically be able to just go right into the store, hand over the older model, and get the newer model in return, in effect transitioning the lease. Though, it’s hard to say if the iPhone 7 would actually qualify, as T-Mobile notes that only select devices are eligible. It could be that brand-new phones would remain off-limits for a few months, until stock is definitively large.
Either way, this is an interesting program to opt into if you are a rabid updater and don’t mind not actually owning your phones.
