After we posted our look at Duke Nukem Forever, I followed-up with a post that encouraged Gearbox to not give up on the series, even if the reviews for the latest game weren’t too flattering. Duke titles in the 90s were fun and well-received, and for the most part, there’s been moderate success with Duke console originals and even Manhattan Project for the PC. One bad game can’t be the end of Duke, right?
Though Gearbox has kept mum on the subject, its publisher, Take-Two, has spoken up and stated that Duke isn’t gone, and we’ll see more IP in the future. This, straight from the mouth of CEO Strauss Zelnick, in an interview with Forbes. While he doesn’t go into great detail about what IP that is, we can be assured that another game will happen at some point, with the potential of something extra (TV show or movie?)
In the same interview, Strauss is asked for his opinion on how Duke Nukem Forever has been received thanks to its content and twisted humor. He mentions that he stands behind each game that goes out the door, and sums up with “What is there left to be said? I’m sorry if you don’t like it. Don’t consume it.” I couldn’t have said that better myself.
A short, but overall good interview. Though, I admit that what I care most about is to hear that Duke isn’t being given up on. As I mentioned in last week’s post, another Duke game holds major potential. Tone down the controversy just a tad, boost up the gameplay, add unique features, and I am sure we won’t be seeing the poor reviews we did with DNF.
