As I have made clear through various news posts and articles throughout the years, I am not that big a fan of DLC. More often than not, downloadable content feels like little more than a money-grub by the developer or publisher – offering gamers things that feel like they should have been in the game from the get-go. Pre-order DLC is even nuttier, giving some gamers special content just because the game was purchased at a particular retailer.
There are some exceptions where I feel DLC is a good thing, but those are rare. Free DLC is one thing, but DLC such as what was sold with Borderlands is what I’d consider to be worthwhile. If a piece of DLC offers you nearly 10 hours worth of gameplay for $10 – $15 and most of that gametime is comprised unique content, then that gets my approval.
Paying $2.50 for a Civilization V map that could be built by a fan using the included map editors? Yeah, that’s a rip-off. I spotted this humorous video at GameTrailers the other day that sums things up quite well.
