On the lookout for a new high-end Linux-based business NAS? If so, Thecus’ ‘Elite Class’ N7770-10G or N8880-10G might prove suitable. The 10G in each device’s name represents the fact that 10GbE Ethernet is default – no need for an add-in card. The N7 is a pedestal-style NAS while the N8 is a 2U rackmount unit; both can be seen below:

Outside of their form-factor and drive bay availability (7 vs. 8), both NASes are almost identical in terms of internal hardware. Both come equipped with Intel’s Core i3-2120 dual-core CPU clocked at 3.3GHz, 8GB of ECC memory, 6x USB 2.0 and 2x 3.0 ports, an HDMI port, and of course, 10GbE Ethernet.
Because the N8880-10G can utilize 8 hard drives, it can uniquely offer RAID60 support. More important than that, though, is the fact that it has a redundant power supply – if one goes down, business continues. Both NASes support High Availability, so if you want to connect two to sync to each other, temporary or permanent loss of one NAS will relegate all duties to the surviving one.
For the sake of further backup, each of these NASes (as well as many of Thecus’ others) support Acronis’ True Image, Dropbox, ElephantDrive, and Amazon S3. They also support Intel Security features, and of course, Thecus’ own Thecus OS 5, which allows the install of some 700 apps.
We’re not quite sure of when either of these NASes will become available for sale, but official pricing is $1,149 for the N7770-10G and $1,899 for the N8880-10G.
