Thecus knows how to make a good NAS – and I should know; I’ve been using (and planning to review) the N4200 for quite some time and have been more than please overall with it. The N8900 is a different beast, however. While the N4200 has a simpler feature-set perfect for the home user or small business that never plan to touch their NAS after its set up, the N8900 allows a lot of expandability, and of course, a much greater amount of storage to be used.
First, we’re dealing with an 8-bay solution here, capable of supporting up to 24TB. For the ultimate in performance needs, there’s SAS 6GB and SATA 6Gbit/s connections along with 10Gbit/s Ethernet ports. For added storage there is also an eSATA port along with dual USB 3.0 ports and six USB 2.0 ports. All 8 internal drives are backed by the LSI 2008 HBA RAID controller. Plus, the NAS is user-expandable with empty available PCI-e slots.
There’s so much more to this NAS than I can mention in a simple news post, so just check out the video and be prepared to drool over what looks to be an incredibly solid, reliable offering. If only it didn’t cost upwards of $3,000 for a diskless model, then I might have picked up a couple!
