Thecus has just launched a brand-new N5000-series NAS, and it packs one hell of a punch. Like all other N5000 series NASes, the N5810PRO includes five drive bays. Where it largely differs is with what’s under the hood, and at the back.
Powering the N5810PRO is a beefier CPU – Intel’s Celeron J1900, a 2.0GHz quad-core offering. The stock configuration includes 4GB of memory, but that can be expanded to 8GB should your needs require it. While specs like these suggest that this could be a Windows-based NAS, it’s not; it’s Linux-based and runs ThecusOS 5.
What makes the N5810PRO special is evident after taking a look at the back:
In case it’s not obvious enough, this NAS includes FIVE Ethernet ports. And yes – they can be aggregated. Thecus says that if you go that route, you’ll be able to attain transfer speeds of up to 500MB/s. In order for that configuration to work, though, your end-point will also need to have 5 LAN ports that can aggregate together, so suffice to say, this isn’t a feature most regular end-users will be able to take advantage of.
If you are able to take advantage of all these LAN ports but have no interest in aggregation, Thecus has six other modes available to you, which include using them for fault tolerance or port-trunking.
Other perks of the N5810PRO include Data Guard, Data Burn, and Snapshot Backup – all of which can use Btrfs – as well as compliance with VMware, Citrix, and Microsoft Hyper-V.
The only bit of information we’re lacking at this point is what the N5810PRO will cost. If we receive that information, I’ll update this post, but if not, we’ll have to wait until next month, when it’s expected to launch into market.
