For as long as the iPhone 4 has existed, some users have been waiting for the elusive white version, but to no avail. Apple keeps delaying the white version so much, that it seems like it’s never meant to see the light of day. Just what is causing such an issue? That’s been a common question since the iPhone 4’s launch, but it was made even more complicated the other day when Apple released its iPad 2… in both black and white.
Personally, I was more surprised in the fact that Steve Jobs made an appearance at the conference, but I admit… the white iPad 2 kind of threw me for a loop. If Apple could make a white iPad, what on earth prevents it from making a white iPhone 4? Well, according to an article at CNN, there are a couple of reasons, and all are severe enough to prevent us from seeing a white iPhone for a while.
The biggest problem is related to the iPhone’s camera. With the flash, the pictures are so washed out that they’re simply impossible to keep, and for a lot of people, that’s just a no go. No one is going to want a phone that can’t take decent pictures, and Apple pretty-well couldn’t sell a phone that had such an issue. Second, the built-in proximity sensor has a problem with a white chassis for tracking purposes, and again, that’s something that simply can’t be tolerated.
These seem like simple issues, but surprisingly enough, Apple still hasn’t managed to tackle them. Can it be done? It’s hard to say, because you’d imagine if it could be, it would have been by now. So, it looks like we’ll keep on waiting, and see if it ever does happen. Until then, we can all consider the iPad 2 to be one really big iPhone. Just don’t try to place a call with it.
Needless to say, Apple has yet to sell the most recent iPhone model in a color that’s not black. The older 3G and 3GS iPhones came in models with white backsides. Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who unveiled both products, made a nod to the iPhone flub at Wednesday’s event. “We’ll be shipping white from Day One,” he said with emphasis, to laughs from the audience.
