We received a bit of marketing from EVGA this morning that told us that anyone purchasing a new 10-series graphics card from the company would receive a PowerLink free-of-charge. Our first reaction? “What in the heck is PowerLink?” The answer: something long, long overdue.
PowerLink, seen above, is a simple device that lets you reroute a graphics card’s power connectors to the front of the card, to allow users to easier route their cables through the back to help retain a clean look. In some cases, it might even help those who can’t use a certain small chassis because of the cables getting in the way of the door.
If that explanation didn’t do its job, here’s a real look at the PowerLink in action:
“But I have a 6- and 8-pin, not two 8-pins!” That’s no problem, as the PowerLink will include the different PCIe port connectors that could be needed, so whether your GPU uses 1x 6-pin, 1x 8-pin, 6+8-pin, 8+6-pin, or 8+8-pin, PowerLink can be altered to support it. It’s not just the connectors that will swap out; PowerLink can slide the connectors to perfectly align with the ports on your graphics card. Essentially, anyone should be able to use this product unless their GPU has an unorthodox design.
The only thing better would be graphics card vendors putting PCIe ports on the front to begin with, but we must imagine that the current location is used for some specific reason (whether it be technical limitations or ones simply imposed by AMD’s and NVIDIA’s designs). Perhaps in time, the ports will shift towards the front, but in the meantime, this is one cool solution for working around a potential problem.
