Believe it or not, Humble Bundle will be turning five this coming May – and what a five years it’s been. When the first bundle released way back in 2010, Humble Bundle as a whole became an instant hit. The ability to buy great games at your own price had serious appeal, and while some of the rules have changed over the years, the core of the business remains intact: You can get great games at great prices and help great charities.
Right after the initial Humble Bundle concluded, Jamie talked about the problem of piracy that the bundle suffered, but finished off noting that over the course of that week, over $300,000 was raised for the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Child’s Play. Fast-forward to today, and the total value across 50 different charities has surpassed $50,000,000. That’s simply incredible.
The coolest thing about this achievement, to me, is that a lot of people donated and didn’t even put much thought into it. If you were to pay $10 evenly across the Humble Bundle operation, the game’s developers, and charities, you made a nice contribution to whichever charities were being featured. Multiply that by anyone who’s ever purchased a bundle. Donating to charity and getting some stellar games in return is one hell of a deal.
To commemorate the achievement, Humble Bundle has produced this video:
It’s noted that the $50,000,000 has been wisely spent. It’s helped provide clean water to those in need, helped make games more accessible for disabled persons, helped fund medical research, and has also provided books to children and funded education.
Unfortunately, no breakdown is given to show how much money has gone to each charity, but to some, that might not matter – it’s all charity. What we do know is that the momentum of the bundles remain, so it’s only a matter of time before the total donated value doubles.
