For the sake of the environment, hybrid and fully electric cars are a good thing. The cost up-front is higher, but down the road (no pun), it could save you money, and likewise have a minimal impact on the environment. But there is just one problem… the lack of noise. It might not seem like a big deal, but for pedestrians, it sure can be.
If outside and crossing the road, or even walking with your back to traffic, you can still remain aware of the surroundings and understand how close an automobile is to you, because of its engine. Even if it’s a modest hum, it’s enough to clue you in. That’s where the problem exists with hybrids and electrics… no noise means that a car could literally sneak up on you and you might not hear it.
To help remedy this issue, Toyota is now offering an optional speaker package (~$148) to its Prius models in Japan, to mimic the sound of a real engine. Yes… to pretend that the engine is actually making noise. First the “new car smell” spray, and now this!
It seems like a kooky idea, but it’s actually a rather good one, especially if you’re driving in a populated area. The speaker is optional, so it’s going to be up to the driver to decide whether it’s needed or not, and while it’s not clear by the article at CNET whether or not it can be triggered on and off at will, I’d have to assume that would be the case.
If such an addition came to these shores, would you opt in?
For now, Toyota will only be selling the speaker system in Japan, and the purchase is voluntary. But a Toyota rep told the AP that the company is considering bringing the feature to the United States and other markets. Pedestrians have the biggest issue with the Prius. Many people simply can’t hear the car coming, due to its ability to run in a nearly silent electric mode during most of its drive time.
