Trion Worlds’ RIFT MMO to Offer Free Server Transfers

Trion’s commitment to the community can only be described as outstanding. In an update coming this summer to its MMO RIFT, the company will be offering players the ability to transfer their characters to a different server for free. There are a few restrictions (as always), but to offer up for free what would normally cost you a month’s subscription is most certainly impressive.

The announcement states that this is an experiment at present, but will allow any of your characters a transfer to a ‘select’ server of your choice, for free. This isn’t some one-off deal either; you can do it once a week with each character. Guild masters can even transfer their entire guild over as well. No need to worry about all your loot either, as all personal possessions will be transferred too.

The ‘select servers’ statement does raise an eyebrow or two, in that, you are territory-locked (you can’t switch from US to EU servers, and vice versa). Trion also wants to keep servers balanced, so they will not allow you to transfer to a full server, or one with too many of a single faction if you belong to the predominant faction. However, you will be able to move from PvP to PvE, Role Play, or any variant thereof.

Those wishing to change to a server where your character or guild name is already taken will be offered the opportunity to change it. Server change does not mean Faction change though, so you will not be able to switch from Defiant to Guardian – although, Trion gives hint as to the possibility in the future.

The fact that this will be offered for free is arguably the most impressive feat, but it’s not all rose-tinted glasses here, as the exact wording is ‘for the foreseeable future’. This may mean after the initial experiment, Trion will then charge for the service – but its current track record would indicate otherwise, so it may be safe to assume that it will not charge. When the next major RIFT™ update hits early this summer, subscribers will be treated to a surprise – free character transfers. Trion Worlds announced today that with RIFT 1.3, players will have the ability to move to select servers in their territory once each week, taking all items, achievements, and titles with them. Additionally, guild leaders will be able to move their guild’s level and experience.
