AMD and NVIDIA are the undisputed champions where serious gaming graphics are concerned, but Intel has consistently been making improvements to its integrated solutions that aim to deliver a real option to those who are content running their games with modest resolutions, medium detail levels and without AA. According to a reason claim, things are looking to get even better soon, all with the help of an improved driver.
At a small Intel event KitGuru made itself to, Intel’s Anna Cheng touted that with upcoming improvements to the company’s graphics drivers, a performance-boost of 40% will be seen. The article discusses a Tom Clancy’s HAWX 2 comparison where on the old drivers, about 15 FPS are seen, while on the revised drivers, that number skyrockets to 79 FPS. That’s clearly more than a 40% gain, but given that figure, it seems Intel would consider that to be the average.
The promise of a 40% performance boost can’t be taken likely, because in the IGP game, where performance by most standards is lackluster, a boost like that is rather significant. AMD’s most recent Radeon HD 6000s IGPs could be hit with some real competition given this, though one thing that does happen to be as important as performance is compatibility, and that’s one area where both NVIDIA and AMD have shined.
Still, a performance boost from a driver update alone is without question impressive. Let’s see if those claims can be seen in the real-world when the updated driver gets released in the months ahead.
