As I write this, I received a press release from Valve just one hour ago talking about pre-orders becoming available for its Steam Controller and Steam Link. That’s some big news – but there’s already been a massive damper put on it. It seems the demand for those items was so large, that both items sold out before most people even knew what happened.
And… that’s that. In the header, Valve states that there are a limited quantity available, and I guess it wasn’t joking. But I think, like many others I’m sure, I’d love to know the actual numbers here. It’s not a secret that some companies purposely limit initial quantities to help drum up more interest (OnePlus One, anyone?), and because Valve is a private company, it doesn’t ever have to expose those numbers.
Sold out or not, there is some good info we can all glean from this. Such as the official release date of November 10. Those who end up pre-ordering will be able to get their units almost an entire month in advance, though, which I’m sure is being done so that Valve can release last-minute firmware updates in advance of the official launch if more bugs are discovered – a wise move, I think.

If you don’t even have what you’d consider a proper PC to act as a Steam Machine (or don’t have a PC at all), you might be interested in taking advantage of vendors that are selling official Steam Machines that come bundled with the Steam Controller. You can get a full list of these official vendors here. If you’re a DIY kind of person, there’s nothing holding you back from building your own and purchasing the gamepad or Link device as stand-alone.
Who’s getting excited?
