Valve’s Orange Box is considered to be a longstanding success, but some credit the regular updates for Team Fortress 2 as having something to do with it. This week, the game will be receiving potentially its last major class update, although it is sure that future minor updates and the odd new weapon will continue to be added for some time. Out of the nine player classes in the game, the Engineer is the only remaining one to have not yet received new weapon upgrades.
What makes this all even more special is that up until Thursday’s planned update, there are 100 golden wrenches that are being randomly “dropped”. Videos of these wrenches in action suggest they are imbued with a form of the Midas Touch, but it is uncertain what other special abilities they have.
All a player has to do to get one is take part in the game’s crafting system, as each craft triggers the potential for the “drop” of a golden wrench! If this sounds reminiscent of Willy Wonka’s Golden Tickets to you as well, then perhaps you should get started on crafting those Dalokohs Bars, although any sort of craft is supposed to work.
Time is short, as all of these wrenches will be found by Thursday. For every 25 wrenches found, an update to the TF2 website detailing another of the new Engineer weapons being unlocked Thursday will be made. The Frontier Justice is the first announced weapon replacement for the shotgun. Valve has confirmed there is no per-day limit and that drops are designed to be evenly distributed across global time zones, so if you have a glut of items in your backpack, we might suggest you get crafting, and quickly!
Luckily for you wrenchless unfortunates, there’s still time to get one. A further 75 golden wrenches can be found through crafting all this week*. We’ll also be teasing Engie’s new weapons (the first of which, the revenge-critting Frontier Justice,, is currently on display)—with all of this culminating in the long-awaited Engineer Update this Thursday!
