Back in April, WD announced the world’s first 5mm-thick hard drives, packed with 500GB of storage space (and in the case of the Black model, some NAND flash for speeding things up). In an effort to continue subtly mocking its competitors, WD has today announced a worthy follow-up to its UltraSlim models: the world’s first 7mm-thick 1TB hard drive.
In all regards, packing 1TB into such a small frame is an impressive feat, and it’s good that those mobile users who need such huge storage for their ultra-slim notebooks now have a great new option. Those who own notebooks designed around 9.5mm drives don’t have to worry – WD states that its latest “Slim” 7mm models can still be used (this is pretty-much common sense, but it is useful to know that your drive won’t bounce around due to the extra space).
The Slim 1TB includes some traditional WD perks such as shock tolerance, cool and quiet operation and dual-stage actuators. The drive will become available at retail soon, and for an SRP of about $140 USD.
