Need a lot of storage on the go, but don’t want to lug around a heavy enclosure? Western Digital’s latest ‘My Passport’ drives are just what you’re looking for. Not only are they trendy and durable, the series is the first-ever to offer a 2TB model. Yes, we’re talking a product not much larger than a mobile drive itself, at 2,000GB. Who wants one? I sure do.
With its new My Passport drives, WD introduces its most scratch/fingerprint-resistant shell to date, adds USB 3.0 support (USB 2.0 also works), and also provides its users with its SmartWare automatic backup software (backing up is a great use of these drives, after all). Perhaps the best feature is that because the drive isn’t a full 3.5″ offering, it requires no external power connector – the USB cable will do just fine.
The official size of the 2TB model is 4.4″ (D) x 3.2″ (W) x 0.82″ (H). And as if it mattered – it weighs just a mere 0.51 lbs. Unfortunately, performance information is not provided, but given the super-large platters that have to be in use here, we’re likely to see the best performance that has ever hit a mobile hard drive. In another unfortunate note, similar to Seagate’s 4TB desktop drive, WD’s 2TB mobile offering cannot yet be purchased outside of the My Passport series.
Pricing-wise, the 2TB model will set you back $250, while other densities include 1.5TB ($200), 1TB ($180), 750GB ($150) and 500GB ($130). As for availability, the 2TB model is available now for purchase through WD’s official store, and I’m sure we can expect it to hit the likes of Newegg and others soon.
