Western Digital Releases WD Photos App for iPhone/iPod touch

In case you haven’t noticed, the iPhone and other App Store-compatible devices from Apple are hugely successful, and chances are at least one or two people you know own one, if not yourself. The credited reason for the mass success hasn’t been the hardware itself (although it is good), but rather the App Store, because it allows people to do a billion different things with their phone.

Because of the popularity, many companies that you typically wouldn’t expect to have an app, do. Even some popular websites have their own apps, and why not? If we had an developer on tap who could create us a similar app, we’d be on it too. Today, though, I received a press release that caught me a bit off guard… Western Digital has released an app. But don’t worry, it’s not some random offering, but serves a real purpose and requires the company’s hardware to run.

The app is called “WD Photos” and it’s designed to work with the company’s external storage solutions, namely the My Book World Edition and also ShareSpace network drives. With the app, people will be able to browse their collection of up to 250,000 photos from anywhere in the world, thanks to the fact that both of the above mentioned devices are able to be exposed to the Internet.

Despite the easy access, your photos still remain completely secure, and thanks to the fact that you can access the photos straight from home, you don’t need to worry about uploading them en masse to some photo-hosting service first, which will likely save you some money. Oh, the best part? The app is also entirely free, so if you own an iPhone or similar device, and a compatible WD NAS box, you have a new app to play with.
