PC gaming during the 90s was great. Games might not have had the graphics we see today, but most of them had heart and were great fun to play. On the FPS side of things, there were many instant-classic titles that PC gamers from that era have fond memories of, and many of today’s gamers might not even be aware of most of them. Wouldn’t it be great to see some of those remade?
In a quick article at Goozer Nation, the author writes about some of his favorite FPS titles from the 90s, and I can agree with all of them. The first he mentions is Redneck Rampage, and that’s a title that I say, “dern right!” to. I purchased the game off of GOG.com last year, and it’s just as fun as I remember. To see the same kind of style in today’s graphics and sound would be quite awesome to say the least.
Another one I agree with, and can’t believe I do, is Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight. I’m not a Star Wars fan, but that game had done so much right, that it simply didn’t matter if you were a fan or not (I feel the same about Star Wars Racer). The game had great graphics, fluid gameplay, and of course, was a lot of fun to play. Tribes and Hexen are also mentioned, and once again, *thumbs up*.
In addition to these, others I’d love to see remade are Team Fortress (none of this TF2 cartoon stuff!), Shogo, Blood, Heretic, Marathon, MDK (not quite FPS, but close enough), Descent, Forsaken and I’m sure there are others I can’t quite recall right now. Do you guys have any picks of your own?
Most gamers agree that LucasArts needs to bring back Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight. Jedi Academy and Jedi Knight Outcast are okay games but nothing tops the original. Just think how much better a remake of Dark Forces II would look and sound. Think of how much better a remake of this genre defining-FPS would be over the Force Unleashed 2. Kyle Kartan is a much better character then StarKiller ever was; at least Kyle was interesting. The chance to use force powers in a first person and third person environment is perfect; imagine slicing off limbs and heads while utilizing next gen graphics. I am sold.
